English Language Teaching Research Awards 2024–25

Call for proposals

We are pleased to announce the British Council 2024-25 call for research proposals under the English Language Teaching Research Award (ELTRA) scheme. This successful and popular scheme aims to support the production of original research that contributes to the body of knowledge related to English language teaching and learning.

What is the purpose of the ELTRA scheme?
  • To facilitate the production of high-quality research relevant to English language teaching (ELT) practitioners.
  • To improve access of policymakers and professionals worldwide to high-quality and relevant ELT research.
  • To facilitate and encourage establishing and maintaining active research links between ELT professionals, researchers, and policymakers in the UK and internationally.
Who can apply?

The scheme aims to encourage effective and equitable research partnerships between academics and institutions in the UK and those in countries listed here: https://www.oecd.org/content/dam/oecd/en/topics/policy-sub-issues/oda-eligibility-and-conditions/DAC-List-of-ODA-Recipients-for-reporting-2024-25-flows.pdf.

The person applying (the co-principal investigator) must be formally attached to a UK university. However, applications will only be considered if they also include a co-principal investigator who is a national of and is based in a recognised institution in a listed country that is included as a research location in the proposed study. Either of the co-principal investigators can initiate conversations about a suitable project to identify possible research partners.

You can find further details and all the application documents here: https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/publications/elt-research-awards/eltra-guidelines.

The deadline to submit research proposals is Friday, 31 January 2025.
