From 8 to 10 May, Svetlana attended the 39th Annual APPI Conference in the beautiful city of Aveiro, Portugal. The conference brought together English language teachers and professionals from across Europe, and over the course of three days, participants had the opportunity to hear from some of the most renowned experts from the English speaking world. It was an event that combined professional learning with the kind of atmosphere that makes people wish conferences came with extra days built in.
As an ELTA representative, Svetlana Kalajdžić also presented a workshop at the conference based on the CLIL method. Her workshop, titled “Cultural Connection Through CLIL”, was built around the idea that culture can be a powerful tool for language learning and, at the same time, a meaningful bridge between nations, which was also one of the conference’s key ideas.
The workshop took place on 9 May at 10:15 in one of the conference rooms at the Meliá Ria Hotel in Aveiro. It was initially planned for 50 participants, but the response exceeded expectations, with more than 50 attendees. Some participants even had to stand, simply because there were not enough chairs for everyone who wanted to attend.
The central aim of the workshop was to demonstrate how a lesson based on the CLIL method can successfully combine all the essential language skills, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Another important aspect was the use of authentic materials, which helped make the lesson more dynamic, distinctive, and engaging.
