We are pleased to share Freedom 250: Cultural Aspects and Teaching Strategies, a special 90-minute program taking place on 20 April 2026 at 2:00 pm at the American Resource Center, Lozionica Center for Creative Industries and Innovation.
This English Language Specialist program commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by bringing Dr. Kevin P. Colleary to Serbia for teacher trainings and public workshops focused on Freedom 250 themes. The program contributes to English language instruction while also exploring American cultural values and civic participation.
To mark America’s 250th anniversary, we have an opportunity to explore American culture and history through the lens of English-language learning. The program centers on Freedom 250 cultural themes, examining how American society has evolved over 250 years and the values that continue to shape the nation today.
Teachers will learn innovative pedagogical strategies for integrating cultural content into language instruction, making historical narratives more accessible and engaging for English language learners. During the session, Dr. Kevin P. Colleary will demonstrate how storytelling, primary sources, and interactive activities can help students explore American culture while also developing their language proficiency. It is the kind of session that reminds us that a good lesson can teach language, culture, and curiosity all at once.
Participants will gain practical classroom techniques for teaching cultural competency alongside language skills, including methods for facilitating discussions about American history, civic life, and cultural values. The program also provides content-driven literacy instruction strategies that can be adapted across grade levels. By examining how Americans understand and celebrate their 250-year journey, participants will deepen cross-cultural awareness and strengthen people-to-people connections between our two nations.
Dr. Kevin P. Colleary has taught at Hunter College, CUNY, and Fordham University’s Graduate School of Education in New York. His research focuses on social studies education, critical thinking, digital literacy, and best practices in teaching and learning. A native New Yorker, he currently lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal.
The program is intended for pre-service and in-service English language teachers.
