Embracing Multimodal Pedagogy: ELTA at the 38th APPI Conference in Lisbon

By Ivana Krsmanović

The 38th Annual APPI Conference at ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon was more than just an academic gathering; it was a dynamic meeting point for educators passionate about reshaping the future of English language teaching. Representing ELTA Serbia, Ivana Krsmanović from the University of Kragujevac, Faculty of Technical Sciences Čačak, attended the event both as a participant and speaker, sharing ideas and experiences with educators and researchers from around the globe.

Under the compelling theme “ELT in a Multimodal World”, the conference encouraged educators to step beyond traditional boundaries, explore innovative approaches, and thoughtfully engage with the diverse realities their students face today. Ivana felt inspired by discussions centred around multimodal pedagogy, hybrid learning environments, and fostering genuine learner engagement through the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework.

For Ivana, this event wasn’t just about new teaching techniques; it was a reminder of the importance of creating humanising experiences in the classroom, understanding the varied modes of interaction students use, and preparing them meaningfully for an increasingly complex world. The conference sparked fresh insights, enriched conversations, and a renewed commitment to innovation in teaching.

As she returned home, Ivana carried with her not only valuable new ideas but also the conviction that the future of ELT lies in embracing diversity, innovation, and above all, empathy.
